Just a few things for Gryphon users this month, mostly in the way of reminders. As this semester begins to wind down and you start thinking about who’ll be doing what next term (we’ve been there ;) we thought it might be a good idea to round up some of the most frequent queries we get, in the hopes it may save you a step as you warm up your summertime crew.

In the meantime, we hope all your senior staffers are staying and that all your new hires are brilliant, yet humble and hardworking. Good luck.

1. When uploading, using ftp is a much better and far faster method (than using your web browser) for almost anything, but especially photos or video. Uploading video via your browser is just not recommended, and with really big files you’re almost certain to run into trouble. Uploading via ftp also allows you to batch import your media right into Gryphon all at once.

2. We always want to know if you experience trouble using Gryphon, but because there are so many variables involved, it’s helpful if you can provide as much information as possible when you write to our support address.

If an error message is presented, copy/pasting that into your message is always encouraged. Links and example files are always welcome too, and allow us to begin working on the problem, rather than coming back to you with more questions.

3. Gryphon uses a caching system for display. I won’t go into the technical details in this post, as it’s covered elsewhere on this blog, but in short, this method of caching means that in some cases – like breaking news, for example – Gryphon may not be updating the front pages with your newest content as fast as you would like.

That’s what the cache control (Settings—> Caches) is for. Using the “Clear” button dropdown menu at upper left, select the ‘Template Cache’ – it rebuilds quickly & easily and should be all you need to touch in order to get your page fronts to show your newest content.

The caching system is your friend, as it’s what allows your site to continue running when you get linked from the NY Times and are sustaining a hundred requests per second in traffic. That said, it doesn’t hurt Gryphon’s feelings if you need to see a story on the front right now either.
